Staff Directory

Ray Miller is the Upper Peninsula Forest Properties Manager. He oversees land management and research projects on all three of M.S.U.'s forests in Upper Michigan. Ray is a research specialist in forest regeneration, having received his Ph.D. in Forestry from Michigan State University, his M.S. in Forestry and B.S. in Resource Management from the State University of New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry.  His current research projects include (1) northern white-cedar regeneration studies, (2) short rotation production of wood fiber, and (3) red pine yield comparisons with larch and spruce species. Ray has managed operations at UPTIC in Escanaba, MI since 1988 and at the Dunbar Forest Experiment Station near Sault Ste. Marie, MI since 1990.

Brad Bender is the Operations Forester for all three of M.S.U.'s forests in Upper Michigan. Brad's responsibilities include overseeing research plot establishment, data collection, and data handling. He also coordinates work schedules and supervises temporary laborers.

Brad received his B.S. from Grand Valley State College and has been a member of the Upper Michigan Forestry staff since 1989.

Brad Bender
Kile Zuidema is the Forest Technician for all three Upper Michigan forests. Kile is responsible for surveying, forest inventory, stand marking, and timber sale administration. Kile is also responsible for equipment and grounds maintenance.

Kile received his degree in Forestry Technology from Michigan Technological University. He has been a member of the U.P. Forestry team since 1989 and became a full-time staff member in 1992.

Kile Zuidema

Bill Cook has been the UP District Forester for MSU Extension since 1997. Bill works with the private landowners, forest industry, and public agencies to implement forestry education programs across the UP. Bill came to the UP from the Red Lake Indian Reservation in northern MN where he worked for seven years. He has degrees in forestry, wildlife management, biology, and resource management from the University of Wisconsin, and a master's degree in forestry from the State University of New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. Bill also has international experience in Germany, Great Britain, and southeast Asia.

Bill Cook
Ingrid Klotz is the secretary at UPTIC and keeps everyone else in line. She joined our team in July of 1997 after working for a local paper company for over three years. Ingrid is a life-long resident of this area and brings a keen interest in the outdoors and natural systems to our office.

Ingrid received her Associates degree in information processing from Bay College.

A succession of interns, students, and temporary laborers have assisted with projects at all of the forest properties.
