Lodging for MSU Researchers Both the Upper Peninsula Tree Improvement Center in Escanaba and the Dunbar Forest Experiment Station in Barbeau are research stations operated by the Department of Forestry and the Agriculture Experiment Station's Office of Land Management. Each has limited accommodations for temporary housing of visiting MSU employees on University business that is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Other researchers may be granted lodging space if the needs of MSU staff have been met and if their mission is in keeping with the purpose of these stations. Reservations are required. FACILITIES
Accommodations for up to four people are available at the Escanaba Center. A small house has been converted for temporary lodging. It includes three sleeping rooms, a complete kitchen, a bathroom, a small living room area, and a work area. Lodging at Dunbar is available in a building with three bedrooms, a total of 6 beds, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and a work area. Both facilities have limited storage capacity for visitor's equipment. Field sample processing is not allowed in the lodging buildings, but space may be available elsewhere at each location. Arrangements should be made well in advance if visitors have requirements beyond just lodging.
All are welcomed and are expected to keep the buildings clean and presentable while they are staying there. Use of heat, water, and electricity should be done conservatively -- just as one would at home. The facility should be left in a condition that is as good or better than it was found. This helps to keep fees low. Damage to the buildings or contents will be the responsibility of the user. Michigan State University is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Smoking in these buildings is prohibited. No pets are allowed in the buildings. There will be no fires on either property. RESERVATIONS Space is available at both stations at any time of year on a first-come, first-served basis; early notification is important. The buildings are winterized by draining the water system and shutting off the heat. If you plan to use the buildings during the winter, you must notify UPTIC's manager at least a week in advance, so that arrangements can be made to prepare for your occupancy. All reservations, cancellations, or changes in plans should be addressed to the manager of UPTIC. RATES (effective 1/1/2000) Rates for Michigan State University staff will be: $25 for the first night, and $5 for each additional person. Subsequent nights lodging will be $5 per person. If a guest will be using the facility exclusively for several weeks but coming and going, rather than staying for a series of consecutive nights, the initial night's rate will be charged only once. Special arrangements can be made for unusual situations. Rates charged for non-MSU staff are double those mentioned above. Fees can be paid either by University account or by check and will be handled through the Escanaba Center. A deposit may be required, based on length of stay. Any cleaning required in the buildings, not done by the guest, will be contracted to a professional cleaning service. The charges will be paid directly by the occupant. Submit reservations
