Here's a list of some characteristics that we used to identify the conifers you saw on the field trip.
Needle shape
Needle length
Number of needles in a bunch
Needle sharpness
Needle color
Bark color
Type of cone
Shape of buds
Aroma

On the Ag and Natural Resources Field Day tour we looked at several common conifer species. Remember we call them conifers because they all have cones. Most of them keep their leaves (needles) all year long and are called evergreens, but some, like tamarack, loose their leaves in the winter. Below are some pictures of trees like the ones we looked at. These are representative of the pines, the spruces, the larches, and Doug-fir (which is not really a fir at all).
