Tours & Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers assist in projects ranging from guided tours to maple syrup production. Volunteer training sessions are held in the spring and fall, with separate sessions for open house events. Trained guides escort groups ranging in age from preschool children to senior citizens on the Tree Identification trail, maple syrup tours in the spring, and the new young children's trail: Forest Homes, Havens, and Hideaways. The Ruffed Grouse Habitat Trail is self-guided.

Tours focusing on the management of a Forestry Agricultural Experiment Station and it's specific research are conducted by a forester.  Visiting groups in the agricultural field or from other countries, college classes, forest industry personnel and groups employed in related fields are interested in this type of presentation.

In-service activities for our volunteers have included winter tree identification classes, spring and fall wildflower walks, Christmas swag making workshop, as well as excursions to area attractions.

One of several sets of logging wheels in Michigan are housed at the Kellogg Forest. Twelve volunteers dedicated 2 ½ years of restoring the wheels which are more than 100 years old. The wheels have been prominently displayed at the forest as an important part of Michigan history since their completion in October 1993.

The forest manager is occasionally contacted by area individuals completing a service project. Some of these projects have included construction of a wheelchair ramp, water bars on steep trails, and tree identification signs on the gravel road and guided trails. Currently a group of area boy scouts is replacing a foot bridge over the Augusta Creek.

Volunteer opportunities are limitless. For tour reservations and further information, contact the KBS Volunteer Office or call 269-671-2356. You can also visit the KBS Volunteer page.
