Muck Soil Research Farm

Current conditions and forecasts

Established in 1941, the Muck Research Farm is located on a deep Houghton muck (organic soil) in southeastern Clinton County. This soil contains nearly 80 percent organic matter. Research being conducted at this site includes studies on weed, insect and disease control with pesticides and/or cultural management practices; cultivar evaluations; tillage; crop rotation; subirrigation; nutrient management; and potato late blight. Michigan is the fourth-highest producer of carrots and the second-highest producer of celery in the United States, two of the crops researched at the farm. Onions, potatoes, sweet corn, radishes and lettuce are also the focus of much farm research.
