MAES Support for Faculty Positions

The MAES works cooperatively with departments and colleges that share faculty members with us. The guidelines provided below are an attempt to spell out our expectations when the MAES provides, or considers providing, support for a faculty position. Our goal is to avoid misunderstanding.

A written position description must be submitted to the MAES. The description should clearly identify:

  1. Funding partners
  2. Coherence with MAES mission
  3. Estimated salary
  4. Estimated start up required

The MAES will respond in writing and specify the percentage of the position that we will support, as well as the estimated support for the start up as identified in the initial request.

Start up will not be released without a preliminary state project on file with the MAES. Within one year of appointment, each new MAES faculty member is required to submit a fully executed project to replace the preliminary state project.

Please consult with us about the composition of the search committee prior to notification of the committee members.

The MAES Director, Associate or Assistant Director should have an appointment with each candidate selected to interview for the position during their initial visit to campus. These individuals will provide feedback before the committee makes recommendations on hiring.

We understand that salary and start up often are modified during final negotiations. Changes must be discussed with and approved by the MAES before finalization.

All paperwork associated with an MAES position will be forwarded to the MAES for countersignature before it goes to central administration for processing. This formalizes our commitment.

The MAES will be consulted whenever an MAES faculty member is being considered for a raise, promotion or a change in assignment.

Transmittal sheets associated with an MAES faculty member will carry the appropriate overhead distribution, as determined by the calculator on the CANR Budget & Finance Office Web site.
